Master's Examination Global Demography
The master's examination (public defense) consists of two parts. The first part starts with a 15-minute presentation of the Master thesis, followed by a 15-minute discussion with the first examiner on the area of research that the thesis is taken from. The second part consists of a 15-minute discussion with the second examiner on specific demographic literature which should predominantly be from a research area within Demography different from the Master thesis.
If you choose me as second examiner, the ten articles of the further compulsory literature will cover five broad topics:
- Gender differences in life expectancy
- Trends and differentials in health
- Trends in life expectancy
- Drivers of life expectancy trends
- Interpretation of period life expectancy
At the beginning of the second part of the examination, I will ask you with which of these broad topics you want to start, and we will speak about the corresponding two articles (see below). Later on, we will extend the examination to another article or two. These will most likely result from our conversation about the first broad topic. E.g., topics 1 and 2 are closely related as well as topics 3 and 4. Topic 5 can be connected with all other topics.
Please do not forget the compulsory literature for all master's examinations (Lutz, W. ,2021. Advanced Introduction to Demography). This does not necessarily but might always come up during the examination.
